When thinking about your wedding you may have starting thinking about the unification part of your ceremony. This can be represented by the couple each having a candle and lighting a new one together, or each having a color of sand and combining them together to symbolize the unification of marriage – two becoming one. Since you’re already straying away from a traditional wedding here are 5 alternative unity ceremony ideas for your destination wedding to consider.

1. Rope knot

For the rope not, you and your fiancé start with your own rope. The unity comes with tying the knot together and giving it a tug! This can be put in a shadow box, hung on the wall with a nice frame, or left all on its own. It also fits the nautical/beach vibe of your destination wedding.

2. Cord

This is similar to the rope knot, but you braid the three strands together during the ceremony.

Taken from the item’s description – “The gold strand represents God, the purple strand represents the groom and the white strand represents the bride. It symbolizes the fact that God needs to be in the center of our marriages. The twine colored strands gives a more rustic feel and still represents God, the groom and bride.”

3. Unity shot

Certainly if I knew about these we would have used them for our wedding! For those couples that don’t practice religion or just want a fun aspect of their ceremony that takes some of the stress away. There are many options for customizable shot glasses and is a small, easy to pack keepsake from your wedding day. Certainly a fun way to relax if you’re nervous about the ceremony!

4. Paint On Canvas

This one is different, but just as fun. You can use your wedding colors for the paint chosen and add stencils to include your names, wedding date, or even the GPS coordinates of your wedding location. Just add the stencils to the canvas before the ceremony, and then you and your fiancé can grab a color and pour the paint right on. After it’s completely dry you can remove the stencils and see the creation you’ve made. Just remember you’ll be handling paint, so be very careful to not get any on your beautiful dress, and consider wearing gloves.

You’ll need the following for this:

  1. Canvas
    • I recommend at least an 11” x 14” size. These can be found at any craft store or even big department stores.
  2. Any design you want for the stencils
    • Again found at most craft stores, they’ll have letter and number stencils for any design you’d like to use.
  3. Paint colors
    • I recommend acrylic paint because it dries fast. You can use oil paint as well, but remember it will take longer to dry, and possibly a really long time if the weather is humid.

5. Glass

Another really cool idea that can be a sentimental item after your wedding ceremony. You pick 2 colors, combine them during  your ceremony, and then ship it back for the company to create a really unique piece for you.

If the above products still don’t seem to attract you, here are some more traditional options. I think a candle or sand ceremony is still really special and there are a lot of products out there that would be beautiful.

Please keep in mind that you may run into a few problems with flying sand back in your luggage. As long as you use the sand from the product, and not from the beach at your wedding, you should be okay. If you get randomly searched and they find it they may take it away. They also may ask if you have any, and it will be your discretion to say if you do or not.

I hope these 5 alternative unity ceremony ideas for your destination wedding were enough to give you plenty of ideas for your own wedding. Any other ideas or comments? I’d love to hear from you. Comment below or contact me here.
