how to travel with your destination wedding dress

So you’ve started thinking about packing and are trying to figure out how in the world you’re going to fit all your stuff in your luggage, especially your dress. Obviously, you don’t want to damage it by shoving it in a suitcase that it doesn’t fit in, but you also aren’t aware of how accepting airlines are when traveling with it. Here’s how to travel with your destination wedding dress.

Your Carry On

Depending on the material and length of your dress, it may fit right in your carry on suitcase. If it rolls or folds easily, this may be the most cost effective way. Just make sure to put it in a bag inside your carry on to avoid it coming into contact with anything else that may leak through.

Most resorts offer to steam your dress (because they obviously know you’ll be travelling with it) so rolling or folding it shouldn’t be an issue.

Wally Bag

This bag is designed specifically for dresses and suits. It lies nicely in the bag and helps in preventing wrinkles. When on the plane you can wait until other passengers have their luggage in the overhead bins and then gently lay this bag over top. If you’d prefer to unzip it so it lies vertically you can ask the flight attendants to hang it in the captain’s closet at the front of the plane as well.

Here is another bag from Amazon that is very similar and much more affordable:

3 more tips on how to travel with your destination wedding dress:

1. Never check your dress

Although it may fit more easily in a checked bag, you run the risk of your luggage not making it to the next airport and delaying it getting to the resort. This is the stuff of nightmares, people. No matter what you do, don’t run the risk of your wedding dress not being available on your wedding day by checking your dress during travel.

2. Bring a sewing kit

Although it’s unlikely, your dress could get snagged on itself or stuck on the zipper. If this happens you will be prepared to fix it. Just put the sewing kit right in the same bag that your dress is in and you’ll have easy access to it if it’s needed.

3. Try to choose a dress that’s easy to travel with

If you have a dream dress in mind or already chosen that has a lot of material that’s okay. If you haven’t picked your perfect dress yet, consider how warm it will be in the sun and how easy it will be to pack. Dresses that are lighter with material will be more comfortable for you and that also typically means it will fold more easily as well.
